An “asthma attack” describes very severe symptoms. During an asthma attack, you may breathe so fast that you may have a hard time talking. Flexible bronchoscopy (bron-kos’ko-pi) is a visual exam of the breathing passages of the lungs (called “airways”). It is also called airway endoscopy. This test is done when it is important for your doctor to see inside the airways of your lungs, or to get samples of mucus or tissue from the lungs. Bronchoscopy involves placing a thin tube-like instrument called a bronchoscope (bron’ko-sko-p) through the nose or mouth and down into the airways of the lungs. The tube acts as a camera and is able to carry pictures back to a video screen.

Pulmonary Diagnostic Testing can range from simple spirometry which measures lung capacity and can screen for diseases such as asthma and COPD to full Pulmonary Function Testing which will evaluate a large array of Pulmonary Diseases. Testing can also include Chest X-Rays, CT Scans and PET Scans to better evaluate the chest and lungs and measures of oxygen at rest and during exercise.

Unfortunately, once you have cancer, quitting smoking will not make the cancer go away, but it can make your life better. Studies show that people with lung cancer who stop smoking, have a better quality of life than those who do not quit smoking. Treatment for lung cancer (such as surgery or chemotherapy), seem to work better for people who do not smoke. Those who quit often spend more time at home than in the hospital and are able to do the things they want to do. So even if you have cancer, quitting can make a big difference in your life.

In general, OSA is considered a lifelong condition, although there are a few exceptions in which OSA can improve or go away. Obesity isa major risk factor for OSA and weight loss has been shown to lead to improvement in OSA. Major weight loss can be very difficult to achieve through diet and exercise although some people are success- ful. At times, a patient may need help from a health care provider to help lose weight safely. Stomach stapling (bariatric surgery) can be highly effective for losing weight, although as with any surgery, complications can occasionally occur. The other situation in which apnea can resolve is in people with large tonsils that are blocking airflow in the throat. Removal of tonsils, particularly in children, has been shown to improve OSA. However, removal of tonsils is typically not sufficient to treat OSA in adults.
