Glaucoma
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Some research predicts that by the year 2040 glaucoma may become the leading cause of functional blindness in the U.S. Glaucoma is actually a family of many different diseases that usually causes an increase in the pressure within the eye, damaging the optic nerve. When pressure inside the eye increases and over time the optic nerve is damaged, blind spots in peripheral areas of vision may occur and eventually begin to affect the central vision. Often called the “sneak thief” of sight, most forms of glaucoma do not produce symptoms until vision is already severely damaged and may take many years to do so. However, if caught early, the disease can usually be controlled and permanent vision loss can be prevented.
Ophthalmology
Intermountain Eye Clinic is the largest multi-specialty ophthalmology clinic in the Intermountain Region. Serving the eye care needs of the Treasure Valley population for the past 40 years, our physicians and staff are comprised of the most experienced and best trained eye care professionals in the area. Macular Degeneration

Laser Eye Surgery
The physicians and surgeons at Intermountain Eye Centers are on staff at: Eagle Eye Surgery and Laser Center, St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and McCall Memorial. Our surgeons have performed over 100,000 surgical procedures.
Cataracts
A cataract results when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. It is usually the result of normal aging. A cataract may also be caused by certain diseases and medications such as steroids. A cataract prevents light from being clearly focused, causing blurred vision and problems with glare such as oncoming car headlights at night. However, a cataract does not form on the eye, but rather within the eye.
Cataract Surgery
Thankfully this is no longer the case. Cataract surgery is now performed whenever the patient’s vision is impaired enough to interfere with normal functioning. Modern cataract surgery involves a tiny incision and the lens is broken apart and it is suctioned gently from the eye, and replaced by an artificial lens. Patients now have the option of Premium and Astigmatism correcting IOL’s.

Neurology
Neuro-ophthalmology is a specialty of both ophthalmology and neurology, and which involves the connection between the eyes and the brain. Generally neuro-ophthalmologists have completed a residency in either ophthalmology or neurology, and from there they further specialize in the field of neuro-ophthalmology.
