Jerry and Thomas took excellent care of our 1997 Mustang Convertible. It took a beating during the past winter and some of the paint was starting to chip and peel. Maaco made it look like new. Very impressed with their attention to detail. They even masked the Mustang logo on the bumper. They delivered at the exact amount quoted. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation and they have earned my business.

Maaco did such a superb job on our Mustang that we decided to have our Yaris painted as well. The clear coat was starting to peel and Maaco of Portsmouth made it look like new.

Quality service and quality work with no hidden charges. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a great paint job at an affordable price. Thanks Maaco of Portsmouth.

I received nothing but the best customer service when I went to this location. I actually found it by mistake and when Thomas found out what shop I was looking for, he offered me the directions. Not that he didn't want to do the job, but after all he wasn't who I was looking for. That was the first reason I decided to inquire about the cost, the financing was another. I was glad that I stopped here. The paint job was amazing and the guys were all very personable and professional. Unfortunately, my son had the car for 3 days before almost totaling it so we had it towed back. Thomas had the parts ordered the same week and had already started work on it. The car is almost done and we are so excited. For such major damage they've done an amazing job! I've stopped in almost every day. Lol!!! I will post pics when I get the car back!

In response to Paul F.’s review:

This customer came into our shop and asked for the cheapest paint job that we could do. I went to the car with the customer and looked at it. He had attempted to repair his own vehicle. After seeing it, I explained to him, that the only thing I could give him was a “NO WARRANTY” paint job that we give to dealers. The reason I gave him that option was because of the poorly repaired condition of the vehicle. I asked him who had done the repairs, and he stated that he did them himself after watching a video on You Tube, and that this was his third car that he had done. I asked him what procedure he used, where upon he told me he sanded and then primed the car. I asked what type of materials he used. He said he used sandpaper and spray can primer from the auto parts store. I told him that spray can primer is made for spray can paint. The materials that we use are very different, which is why I gave him the no warranty paint job. I thoroughly explained that there might be problems because of this. After painting the vehicle just as I had warned the customer, my paint softened his primer and caused numerous air bubbles in the paint. I called the customer and explained what happened and asked him to come up to the shop and look at it. Once he got here, I told him exactly what happened and why it happened from my knowledge of painting vehicles for over 25 years. He told me that in his experience in painting three cars, that this had never happened before and it had to be something that we did wrong. So in good faith, I offered to repaint his car for $250, which is my cost. He was not happy with that, and stated that he was going to call the spray can company and ask them what happened. We are sorry that this customer was unhappy with his results, but we clearly stated the outcome that was possible. Our goal is to provide our customers with a quality paint job at a low cost. This is a perfect example of why we don’t warranty body work that is not done by us, and needs to be done by an experienced body technician.

If I had the option I'd give Maaco in Portsmouth a negative 5 star. I have had three cars painted there since 2003. The first two came out great. The third however is a different story. For the first two cars I did all the prep work (sanding, priming, etc.). I then had Maaco paint the cars.

It had been several years since I had Maaco paint a car so I decided to call them and find out how much it would cost me to get my car done. I was quoted $375 if I did all the prep work. That seemed like a reasonable price to me (about $75 more than the last car 4yrs ago). I proceeded to do the prep work just like I did for the first two cars.

However when I took my car to Maaco, an employee there, Thomas Nance, told me that the cheapest paint job he could give me was $500. I did not want to pay that much and managed to talk him down to $400. (plus a $50 sanding charge which i had never had to pay before) He was supposed to finish the car in five days. Four days later I got a voice message from Thomas informing me that my car was finished but had come out terribly, and I needed to come down to the shop and see it. He also informed in the message that since this was a "no warranty job" there was nothing he could do about it.

At the shop I saw that not only was my car the wrong color, but also, the paint job had tons of air bubbles. Thomas blamed the primer- (Yeah, the exact same stuff I used for the other 2 cars). I asked him if he had sanded the car like he said he would. At first he said no then caught himself and said yes.

(I later called the primer manufacturer as well as 3 body shops and a paint supply store. All 5 agreed that the problem was that Thomas had water in the line when he was painting the car.)

Thomas said he could "cut me a deal" and do it again for the cost of supplies ($250). Being as how i had no choice (if I left the bubbles the paint would peel within weeks) I stupidly paid Maaco to do it again. This time when I came to pick up my car I found that the bubbles were gone but I could still see exactly where they had been. Completely fed up with them I paid my $700 bill took my car and left. Unfortunately I was not able to get any of my money back. I am writing this review 2 and 1/2 months after having my car painted. The paint is already peeling.

Maaco in Portsmouth ripped me off. Take this warning and don't let them rip you off too.

Poor Quality and Customer Service

I had some paint and body work done on my vehicle here and was totally dissatisfied with the quality and service I received. I initially went to them to have some minor spot work and some dings taken out of the bed of my truck and ended up getting the entire bed repainted becasue it was apparently less expensive that way (paid almost $1K). The first time I went to pick up my truck the paint was not even close to matching. It had a dull and hazy appearence as well as "fisheyes" and swirl marks from where they did the body work covering the entire surface. There was also obvious amounts of dirt in the paint from not painting in a sterile environment. I also noticed the vehicle was dirty, inside and out, and that a pair of sunglasses had been taken from my center console. Additionally, my stereo had obviously been tampered with. It was my fault for even leaving those items in there, but one should be able to place a certain amount of trust in a credible business, which this particular Maaco obviously is not. At any rate, the reason I was given for the poor quality of work was that the technician probably over-baked it, and I was told another technician would correct it. The second time I went to pick up my truck there were still obvious imperfections in the paint...there was still dirt in it, the "fisheyes" were completely obvious and swirl marks were noticeable throughout the surface. After discussing with the manger he told me he considered it a good paint job and he was not going to paint it again. I contacted Maaco headquarters and sent them pictures to relay my dissatisfaction with no avail. Fortunately, I was able to get my money back through other means. I also had two experienced and credible sources inspect the work and they were apalled at the quality of work for the price I paid. This particular business does shoddy work at best with incompetent technicians, inferior quality paint and in a far from sterile environment.
