Very satisfied with my therapist, however, their ability to deal with special circumstances for cancellation has room for improvement. I was undergoing a procedure at Oschner and was notified the day before that I would be there longer than I understood and when I hung up the phone I called Brown Rogers to cancel the appointment giving about 20 hrs notice. When arriving for my appointment I was told I had to pay $50 for the cancellation because I did not give 24 hrs notice. When I refused to pay I was asked to leave. I was in business with over a 1000 members, and there were circumstances that I made exceptions when necessary. Not everyone does business in the same manner. Very disappointing!!!!

You have commonly heard the phrase, “MAKE SURE YOU ARE DRINKING ENOUGH WATER.” Hydration is important for the body not only as a daily practice, during physical activity, but also plays an important role in the aid of weight loss. The human body is made up of approximately 50-75% water. The percentage of water varies based on age and gender. Fluid intake is essential to good health. Water is needed to regulate your temperature, maintain joint health and to deliver essential vitamins and minerals. Dehydration leads to impaired nerve and muscle function due to the imbalance of sodium and potassium within the body. Brain and muscle function become impaired causing decreased muscle coordination and impaired athletic performance. Early signs and symptoms of dehydration include headaches, dry mouth, chills, dry skin, excessive thirst, and fatigue. The color of one’s urine is a good indicator of proper hydration. Improper hydration will cause your urine to become a dark yellow. Signs of worsening dehydration are increased body temperature, heart rate and body temperature. If you become confused, have vision disturbances and difficulty breathing seek immediate medical attention. Your risk of dehydration increases when you sweat excessively, increase your exercise intensity and duration, when the temperature is high and at high altitudes.

The pelvic floor consists of several muscles and other types of tissue that work much like a sling to keep pelvic and abdominal organs supported and in place. Pelvic floor dysfunction is a broad term that refers to conditions caused by weakened or tightened muscles in the pelvic floor, as well as certain problems with the lower back and hip joints. These problems can be a result of pregnancy, childbirth, poor posture, infection, injury, or surgery.

Ultrasound (US) treatment involves use of sound waves over the area being treated to create vibrations that generate heat. When the tissues vibrate, friction is produced at the molecular level, which causes the temperature of the tissues to increase. While heating packs can be effective in warming an affected area, they are unable to reach the depth that US can. It can also be used with an anti-inflammatory topical medication delivered directly to a specific area, in a process called phonophoresis..

Cartilage in the hip can become worn down, hip tendons can become overused, hip muscles can fatigue, and the hip bone itself can be fractured during a fall or similar injury. If you experience hip pain toward the outside area of your hip, the buttock, or thigh it can be due to injuries involving tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the hip region. Another cause of low back pain, buttock pain, hip pain or even leg pain may be attributed to dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint (SI joint). The symptoms of an SI joint dysfunction may feel very similar to pain caused by sciatica.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is known as a condition where by the blood flow in the limb arteries are obstructed. Commonly, the legs are the most affected. These arteries are obstructed due to plaque deposits that restrict blood flow through the peripheries. Although blood flow may be also restricted by deep vein thrombosis, which may be a blood clot that occurs in the periphery of the limbs. Most patients are asymptomatic, but may experience intermittent claudication (pain on walking). Common symptoms of PAD include pain during walking and rest, skin ulcers, cramping, aching, clubbing of the finger or toenails, cold skin, blue tinged skin, and slow blood refill. Thus, there is a lack of blood flow to remove anaerobic metabolites that cause a pain sensation when built up. Critical limb ischaemia occurs when the blood flow reduction is so severe that it causes pain on rest or loss of tissue (ulceration or gangrene).

A herniated disc, also sometimes called a bulging or protruded disc, occurs when the cushion-like cartilage (the disc) between the bones of the spine is torn, and the gelatin-like core of the disc leaks. Often mistakenly called a slipped disc, a herniated disc can be caused by sudden trauma or by long-term pressure on the spine. This condition most often affects people aged 30 to 50 years; men are twice as likely to be diagnosed as women. Repeated lifting, participating in weight-bearing sports, obesity, smoking, and poor posture are all risk factors for a herniated disc. The majority of herniated discs do not require surgery, and respond best to physical therapy. Physical therapists design individualized treatment programs to help people with herniated discs regain normal movement, reduce pain, and get back to their regular activities.

Astym treatment is a method of manual therapy, and is non-invasive, which means there are no injections or incisions. Instruments of various shapes are applied on top of the skin to locate dysfunctional (unhealthy) tissue, and to transfer mild to moderate pressure to the underlying soft tissue structures, using massage-like strokes.
