Teeth Cleaning
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are removed only if they are deemed potentially problematic. There are several reasons a wisdom tooth might be labeled as problematic. Factors that determine whether or not wisdom teeth must be removed include jaw size, crowding, proper occlusion, and impaction. Often, radiographs taken at regular dental cleaning appointments will show when wisdom teeth extraction is recommended.

Crowns
After the extraction site and bone graft heal, the oral surgeon can place the implant post. The post needs time to bond to the jawbone, typically at least 4 months. After securing the post, the oral surgeon can place the abutment. Frequently, a third appointment is necessary to place the crown.
Bridges

Root Canal Treatment
Dental trauma can cause broken teeth and severe pain. Your teeth may break due to trauma from an accident or sports injury. They may also become compromised after a root canal.
Apicoectomy
In some cases it may be necessary to remove the infected root tips or apex and the nearby tissue. This is known as a apical surgery or an apicoectomy. The area around the apex of the tooth that is infected is cleaned, and the tip of the root is resected and sealed. Sutures are placed and an ice pack is applied. Medication is prescribed to help alleviate any pain or discomfort and it is best to plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients will have some minor swelling and occasional bruising with some numbness.

Periodontal Surgery
Advanced gum disease eventually wears down the gums and the bone underneath. To prevent tooth loss, oral surgeons place bone grafts in vulnerable areas.

Dentures
Because a denture rests on the jaw bone, it is important to match the shape and size to a new prosthesis. For a comfortable fit, bone may need to be smoothed, reshaped or removed before other dental procedures. Your surgeon will consult with you to determine your specific needs.

Dr. Steven Miyamoto is a graduate of UCLA Dental School and completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He also trained at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C., the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, and the Staten Island University Hospital. He also trained at the Canniesburn Oral and Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery Hospital in Scotland, United Kingdom. Dr. Miyamoto has been serving for several years as the Membership Chairman for the Orange County Dental Society. He has also served as Chairman of the California Dental Association New Professional Committee. He has been a liaison on the CDA Membership Committee and the Committee on Education and Professional Relations, and a Delegate at the CDA House of Delegates for several years. Most recently, Dr. Miyamoto has helped the California State Dental Board construct the licensure examination for Oral Surgery Assistants. He also helps to organize overseas medical missions trips to Mexico, Guatemala, and China. He is also a member of multiple local and national societies including the California Dental Association, the Orange County Dental Society, Tri-County Dental Society, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the California Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesia, the Southern California Orofacial Academy and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. In addition, Dr. Miyamoto is a California State Board inspector for General Anesthesia.
Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction is a procedure to remove a tooth from its socket. People often refer to this procedure as having a tooth "pulled."
Bone Grafting
For rapid healing, platelet-rich plasma and stem cells are drawn from the patient’s own blood. Dr. Miyamoto has used this technology for over twenty years. He also strives to increase rapid healing through the use of advanced bone grafting techniques, laser soft tissue surgery, and the piezosurgery ultrasound machine for hard tissue surgery.

Orthodontics
Wilckodontics, or Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics, is a procedure that makes orthodontic work faster and more efficient. The process begins with removing part of the surface of the alveolar ridge where the teeth sit. By removing some bone material, orthodontic work can progress quickly.
Braces
The procedure to uncover and properly align an impacted canine has two steps. First, the orthodontist needs to apply braces and other techniques to open a space for the tooth. Next, the oral surgeon uncovers the tooth and places a bracket with a chain to gently pull it to its new position.
