Dental Examination
With an oral examination and a panoramic x-ray of the mouth, Dr. Bouneff or Dr. Kooning will evaluate the impacted wisdom teeth’ position and predict if there are any present or possible future problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and wisdom tooth extraction result in a superior outcome for the patient.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase of the dental restoration begins. The dental specialists may uncover the implants and attach small posts that protrude through the gums. The implants eventually act as anchors for a dental crown, dental bridge, or dentures. After the artificial teeth are placed, these posts will not be visible. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months, and most patients will experience minimal disruption in their daily life.

Other dental specialists may be called upon, such as endodontists who may be asked to perform root canal therapy and/or restorative dentists who may need repair or rebuild fractured teeth. If injured teeth cannot be saved or repaired, dental implants are often utilized as replacements for missing teeth.

If there is one thing we all want more of, it’s time, and to be able to easily affix your dentures in the morning without any headaches or messes is priceless. At the end of the day, it’s just as easy. You snap them off and head right to bed.
Overdentures
Getting snap on overdentures doesn’t happen overnight. The process generally happens over several months due to the fact there are two major elements required. Initially, dentures will be selected and ordered. Once they are settled on, implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone. After a healing time of three to six months, it’s time to get the snap ons. The implanted posts need to be firmly in their place and healed before a snap in denture can actually snap in. At this phase your dentures are fitted to snap firmly onto the implants. Your new smile has arrived.

Maxillofacial Surgery
Practicing for over 25 years in the Portland area, Dr. Kooning received his dental degree from OHSU with high honors. He trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the State University of New York. Dr. Kooning is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Western Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Oregon Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Tooth Extractions
Also, bone grafting for the patient can be performed at the time of tooth extraction. Donor bone is often used at this time to build up the ridge. Bone grafts typically need three to six months to heal prior to placing implants. The specific bone graft that will be necessary for your case will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation. This will include the surgical procedure, your post-operative course, as well as subsequent necessary steps.
Bone Grafting
Today, however, we are able to grow new bone when needed. This gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width. It also provides an opportunity to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance. Bone grafting is a process that can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure from previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries.

Orthodontics
While orthodontics alone can correct bite problems if only the teeth are involved, surgery is performed may if your jaw needs repositioning.
Braces
Impacted wisdom teeth may contribute to the crowding of your teeth. This is most noticeable with the front teeth, primarily the lower front teeth. This is most commonly seen after a patient has had braces.
