The goal of blood transfusion is to treat symptoms caused by anemia by replacing red blood cells so that proper oxygenation of organs can occur. Blood transfusions are most often used in acute situations such as acute hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells) or blood loss, but can also be used for chronic conditions such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia or chronic kidney disease.

Poisoning Treatment
Do not feed your pets any of your delicious desserts. If you plan to bake desserts this Thanksgiving, it’s also important to keep your pets away from the batter, especially if it contains raw eggs. This could also contain salmonella bacteria that could result in food poisoning. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and cats—so are raisins, currants, and the sugar substitute, xylitol. Be sure to keep all desserts out of your pet’s reach.

Spaying and Neutering

Laboratory Services
Blood transfusions are administered by a veterinarian and do not require anesthesia. At Trussville Main Street Animal Clinic the patient will be screened prior to the transfusion and cross-matched with the donor blood to determine compatibility. This is especially important in cats and dogs that have had prior blood transfusions. The patient is monitored closely in case of adverse reaction by our veterinary nurses throughout the four hours of transfusion. Once the transfusion is completed our staff will check the patient’s vital signs and perform blood tests to monitor the resolution of the anemia.
Microchipping
At your cat's annual exam, your veterinarian will answer any questions you may have and discuss other services that could improve their overall health such as spaying/neutering, microchipping, and dental care.
