Tree Removal and Planting

Tree Removal
Trees are an important and valuable part of residential landscapes and properties. Trees can also be a hazard to humans and structures. I have prepared some guidelines and advice for consumers when accessing services for tree health care or for tree removal or trimming.
Stump Grinding and Removal
PRUNING AND REMOVAL. These are a few companies which offer services such as pruning, cabling, removal, lightning protection, bracing, stump grinding, etc.
Storm Damage Cleanup
The most important way to prevent oak wilt is to avoid injury to the tree during the warm months, especially April through August. So no pruning should be done during those months unless necessitated by storm damage. If pruning does take place, the trees should NEVER be climbed using climbing spurs and any wounds should be sealed immediately with pruning paint. These precautions are to avoid attracting the beetle that carries the disease.
Tree Planting

Tree Pruning and Trimming
Upon his death in 1986, the business was taken over by his son, John Sutton. For the first 20 years of its existence, the company was a full service tree company, doing all types of tree service and landscaping. In the mid-1960’s, the landscaping, tree trimming and tree removal parts of the business were discontinued. Since that time, UTS has concentrated on providing high quality tree health care, including diagnostic services and treatments for pest and disease control, fertilization, and tree surgery. UTS serves primarily Shiawassee, Livingston, and Genesee counties. Since April of 2016, UTS no longer does spraying and deep root fertilizing, but continues with diagnostic, injection, and tree surgery services. UTS also does deer protection applications. John is an ISA Certified Arborist. UTS maintains professional membership in the International Society of Arboriculture(ISA) and ISA Michigan.
Tree Fertilization
DEEP ROOT FERTILIZATION is done with a hydraulic sprayer, injecting the fertilizer in solution or suspension with large amounts of water. The mixture is injected into the soil to a depth of 12 to 18 inches. We inject 5 gallons per trunk diameter inch, delivering ¼ to ½ pound of elemental nitrogen per trunk diameter inch. A large portion of the nitrogen is in a slow-release form. (Sometimes, if injection area is limited or the ground is particularly difficult to inject, we use higher strength solution and inject the same amount of fertilizer with less water).

Trees and shrubs are important components of most landscapes, adding to the beauty and value of property. Here we discuss some basic principles of care to maintain the health and beauty of landscape plantings and native trees. Homeowners with the interest and energy can do much tree and shrub care for themselves.
Tree Cabling and Bracing
The proposal should identify the trees to be pruned by location and species (or common name) and what type of pruning is to be done. Trees which have to be climbed for pruning or cabling should NEVER be climbed with climbing spurs. Oak trees and elm trees should not be pruned during the spring and summer months unless it is for cleanup of storm damage. If oaks or elms are pruned in the warm months, the wounds should be sealed.
Arborist Services
The answer is the same as a human doctor will give. We guarantee that we will do the best service possible. We guarantee that we will inform our customers of the problem identified and the treatments available. We guarantee that we will apply treatments according to accepted standards, with appropriate timing and in the recommended doses or rates. We guarantee that a certified arborist will assure that treatments are applied correctly and skillfully.
Tree Mulching
Trees and shrubs thrive best if planted in appropriate locations and if they receive proper care and maintenance. Considerations must include amount of sun, type of soil, presence of alternate host species, drainage, pest and disease threats, etc. For example, red maples and pin oaks do not thrive in heavy clay soils that have a high pH level. Many trees and shrubs do not thrive in partial or heavy shade. Pines and other evergreens often do poorly on berms. Pines and spruces that are crowded are more likely to get needlecast disease. Organic mulch around trees can protect them from temperature extremes, prevent mower and weedwhacker damage to the trunk, and add organic content to the soil as the mulch decomposes.

Snow Removal
3) If removing the stump and root plate is not practical or possible, then trenching or vibratory plowing between infected tree(s) and healthy trees should take place before cutting down the infected tree(s). The recommended depth of trenching or vibratory plow disruption of roots is 5 feet. However, 80-90% of roots are within the top two feet of soil, so a large portion of potential grafts can be removed with lesser depths of trenching.
Landscaping Services
These four P's, picking, planting, prevention and pruning, are part of a good landscape maintenance program that is specific to the landscape and its tree and shrub variety. This program can be set up on an annual fee basis, or ala carte based on services as they are provided. We provide this service in Midland, Saginaw and surrounding areas.
Lawn Maintenance
Lawn care companies and companies without certified arborists on staff may not be using the optimal methods. We recommend that you find a company with Certified Arborists guiding the treatments or doing the treatments. We always have a certified arborist guiding the treatments.
