Behavioral Counseling
We can also assist with any behavioral issues you may be having with your pet. We understand the toll a behavioral problem can take on the special relationship you share with your pet. We also believe that the emotional well-being of your pet is an important part of its overall health. For these reasons, the staff at the Folly Road Animal Hospital finds it particularly satisfying helping you solve any behavioral problems you might be experiencing. Because some behavioral problems might be exacerbated by pain or a medical condition, and because behavioral medicines may be prescribed, a veterinary exam is required. Set up a behavioral consultation with Dr. Sheridan and download and print the following behavioral history form to assist in an accurate diagnosis.
Nutritional Counseling
The best approach to weight loss for pets is exactly the same as it is in people: a combination of reducing calories and instituting an exercise program. Work with your veterinarian to create the best exercise program for your dog. Set aside the same time each day to exercise your dog—make it a habit. Start your dog off slowly, with walking. Then, as your dog gets into better shape, move on to games that call for running, such as “fetch”. If you don’t have time to exercise your dog, ask a friend or dog walker to do it. For obese dogs, one can follow the feeding guidelines offered in the pet food calculator in the links below. But generally, most owners are feeding their obese dogs by an excess of 30% by volume, in our experience. An initial calorie restriction of 25%, then, is generally going to put the dog on a safe track to weight loss, with possible future calorie reductions needed. This can be easily confirmed by regular weight checks. If weight loss seems too rapid, discontinue the restriction and see a veterinarian. But more often than not, additional calorie restriction is usually justified by confirmation that weight loss is still not occurring, or to a very minimal degree. If weight loss is occurring at a reasonable rate, continue the program until the ideal body score index is achieved and then titrate the diet slowly back to where weight is stable (neither losing nor gaining weight). Do not resume feeding to the original volume that got the dog obese in the first place! Instead of food as treats, try puzzle toys that dispense treats infrequently, such as the “ Buster Cube “, or the “Busy Buddy” brand toys, which includes the “Kibble Nibble”, and the “Magic Mushroom” and Kong brand toys, and a variety of ‘smart toys’ by
Comprehensive Examination
Preventive health care and comprehensive physical examinations are important to your pet’s health. During regularly scheduled office visits, your pet can be brought up-to-date on immunizations, and future health problems may be recognized before they become severe. Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Dogs and cats (especially puppies and kittens) are routinely infected with intestinal parasites, sometimes without apparent evidence of the infestation until it is too late. Fortunately, we have effective medications to treat most of these parasites. With the advent of broad spectrum heartworm medications that not only prevent heartworms, but also treat several types of intestinal worms, control of parasites is even much more effective than it used to be! We recommend all dogs and cats in SC remain on one of theses types of products year round.
Pain Management
Post-Surgery: When you pick up your pet they will probably still have traces of anesthesia in their system, so don’t give them food and water immediately (especially not after that bumpy care ride!) Wait until they are home and comfortable and try giving them just a small amount of water; if they are unable to keep it down take it away until morning when you can try another small amount of water. If they hold down the water without vomiting, you can give food. If any vomiting continues for more than 2 hours, you should call the veterinarian. You will also want to wait until the next morning to give them any pain medication. Most pets are given a shot of pain medication before the surgery that will last for 24 hours.Giving any further pain medication before the next morning might overdose the animal and could cause problems. Most dogs will go home with an oral NSAID for post-surgical pain, while cats and very small dogs might receive buprenorphine (an opioid). If you want to be sure that pain management is included in your pet’s aftercare, you are welcome to request it at any time.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
These requirements vary with the destination and potential disease risk posed by the animal species. For example, Hawaii is a rabies-free state and has very strict entry requirements for dogs and cats coming from the U.S. mainland. Additionally, some countries have concerns about leptospirosis or echinococcosis, so treatment or preventative measures may be required prior to travel.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Most animals will come out of surgery with sutures that will need to be kept clean and dry for 7-10 days afterwards. If your pet has sutures, keep them out of water and mud until the sutures have been removed. Keep your pet from licking, biting or scratching the affected area. Constant licking can cause a secondary bacterial infection at the site of the sutures. Biting or scratching can cause the sutures to be pulled out. If your dog won’t stop harassing the sutures, you can put Lickguard cream or “ Yuck Spray ” around the wound. Sometimes an E-collar or “ Bite Not” collar might be necessary to prevent your pet from biting or licking the area. We also have a bandage material which delivers a small electrical shock when an animals tongue makes contact with it. If your pet continues harassing the incision, and you notice that it appears red or swollen, call your vet for an appointment. Also look for swelling associated with the incision which might indicate a fluid pocket or hernia which will need immediate veterinary attention. Do not apply hydrogen peroxide, ointments, witch-hazel or other astringents without the advice of a veterinarian. Do not bathe the pet or allow it to go swimming until the sutures are removed. Do not administer any kind of pain relief without first consulting with your veterinarian. Certain types of over the counter pain relief may be dangerously incompatible with drugs already administered to your pet at the time of surgery.

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Four to twenty percent incidence of spay incontinence in spayed bitches; mild increases in cognitive dysfunction in castrated stud dogs; decreases in working drive in male dogs; increases in aggression towards people, including family members in spayed bitches probably due to decreased “bonding” hormones; a four fold increase in risk of bladder cancer; a doubling of splenic hemangiosarcoma in dogs of both sexes and a five fold increase in cardiac hemangiosarcoma in the same group; an increased risk of cranial cruciate rupture in spayed females; an increase in obesity in cats (studies are not clear in dogs, but in all animals, can be easily controlled by calorie restriction); an increased risk of urinary tract infections in spayed bitches, possibly from the maintenance of infantile vulva conformation; a correlation with adrenal gland disease and alteration in ferrets; an 8.7 times risk of diabetes mellitus in altered cats of both sexes.

Diabetes Treatment
It was determined that obesity affects more than half of pets in America, in a recent national study. An overweight pet is more susceptible to arthritis and joint disease, spinal trauma, heart and liver disease, high blood pressure, airway obstruction, diabetes mellitus, urinary obstruction and certain types of cancer. Thyroid Disease Treatment
A new diet that shows a lot of promise in early clinical trials is Hill’s Prescription Diet: Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution ( canine and feline.)This food utilizes “ nutrigenomics,” where ingredients in the food activate gene expression, helping to increase metabolic rates naturally and burn calories more effectively. A program of weight loss with this diet begins with an appointment at the FRAH, a veterinary exam, morphometric measurements, and a Pet Obesity Panel. This blood panel contains tests for baseline evaluation of the general health of the patient as well as a set of screening tests to evaluate for common endocrine disorders affecting the weight of the patient including diabetes, adrenal disease and thyroid disease. Heart Disease Treatment
All surgery is performed in a quiet, warm environment by experienced surgeons. Monitoring devices, such as an ECG machine and pulse oximeter (measures the percent of dissolved oxygen in the blood) may be used on your pet. Additionally, a trained assistant aids Dr. Sheridan in monitoring your pet under anesthesia.
Kidney Disease Treatment
In addition to her volunteer work, she enjoyed long walks on the beach, sailing, fishing, barking enthusiastically at dolphins, chasing any and all types of rodents, and completing amazing “Snatcher” tricks—-which consisted of “snatching” away any dropped or unattended food items. Snatcher had recently been called out of semi-retirement to take on the training of another Jack Russell named, Sparrow. Sadly, 5 years into Sparrow’s vigorous training, Snatcher succumbed to kidney failure at nearly 16 years of age. We will all miss her very much and Dr. Sheridan still enjoys telling stories about her amazing feats of bravery and intelligence. Her protégé, Sparrow, has now taken her place as greeter at the Folly Road Animal Hospital.
Cancer Treatment
O Any new wound if your pet has a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, immune deficiency, bleeding disorder, or is on prednisone, cortico-steroids, or chemotherapy.

Wound and Fracture Care

Veterinary Surgery
Free-range, backyard chickens willingly trade their bio-security for a little freedom and personal enrichment. Exposure to natural disease and sometimes trauma from predators is the occasional result. They don’t seem to mind, because 17 out of 18 birds surveyed, said they would do it again, if they could- but sometimes their owners get a little worried. That’s where the FRAH can be of support to owners of these wonderful pets. Dr. Sheridan can provide medical and surgical care for chickens that prefer to live life on the edge!
Declawing
Some suggestions to curb destructive scratching are: punishing (correcting) by squirt guns, water pistols, loud noises and harmless “booby traps”; trimming nails often to reduce their damaging effect on furnishings; applying Soft Paws; or declawing. Corrective behavior works well when the owner is present, but “booby traps” that do not injure the animal, can be used to deliver consistent punishment in the owner’s absence. Some examples of these might include laser-eye triggered alarms, ScatMats and motion detector, scarecrow-type devices. Low tech devices might include light duty mouse traps with fly swatters or cardboard squares duct taped to the metal snap bow (snapping part) to decrease its velocity and prevent harm when it is triggered. Precariously stacked empty coke cans and other tricks might startle the cat away from a favorite scratching area. Regularly trimming your cat’s nails will eliminate the problem of sharp pointed tips which easily catch and snag furniture, carpet or skin. Your veterinarian can assist you in nail trims if you are unable to cut them yourself.
Spaying and Neutering
If you are considering spaying or neutering your pet, there is a lot to consider. Traditionally, veterinarians have been staunch advocates of spaying and neutering programs for a number of reasons. The AVMA still advocates aggressive spay and neuter programs within the industry, as does the American Humane Society.
