Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that can affect any joint in the body.Â For us, that includes the ankle joint, foot joints, and even toe joints.Â Being the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis affects millions of people around the world. Individuals in their mid-to-late forties tend to have a higher risk of developing osteoarthrosis.Â Physiologically, osteoarthritis is resulted from the stress on the joint, repetitive movements and wear and tear. The damaged cartilage in the joint will cause inflammation and pain. At the same time, it restricts the range of motion in the joints. Being a progressive condition, the symptoms of osteoarthritis tend to worsen over time. As the condition deteriorates, patients may find it hard to climb stairs, walk, or even stand. I went to an urgent care place for bad heel pain a few days ago. Today, I noticed my pain was getting worse since my urgent care visit so I was desperate to find an actual podiatrist that could see me same day. I called several offices and got the same disappointing response. â€œWe are full today, we can squeeze you in next week.â€ I did not wanna go thru this kinda pain without being sure what was really causing it so I decided to call one more office, and thatâ€™s how I found Advanced foot and ankle. I explained to the receptionist what was going on, and from the start he seemed genuine in wanting to get me into the office immediately this afternoon. They took better x-rays than urgent care did and discovered I actually had a small fracture. Dr. Legel was very nice and went over the x-rays and sent me home with more knowledge on how to take care of this and heal it. The entire staff was awesome and Iâ€™m so glad I discovered them today!

Lesions
If you suspect you have plantar warts, you may have the following symptoms: pain or tenderness while walking, a lesion that interrupts the ridges in the skin of your foot, small fleshy lesions on the bottom of the foot, or a callus where a wart has grown inward over a well-defined spot on the skin. Also, tiny black dots may be visible in the base of the lesion, which are actually dried blood contained in the infected capillaries. Also, warts tend to hurt more when squeezed side to side than when directly pushed down on.

Sports Medicine
Athletic shoes need to be replaced after one year, whether or not they are worn, and after a certain amount of repetitive load is placed on them and wears them down. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine advises replacing running or walking shoes after 300 to 500 miles of wear, and replacing aerobic, basketball, and tennis shoes after 45 to 60 hours of wear. Athletic shoes should also be replaced if they show signs of unevenness when placed on a flat surface, display noticeable creasing, and/or when the heel counter breaks down.
Physical Therapy
A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.
Slipped Disc
If surgical intervention is necessary, Dr. Legel’s goal is to provide immediate pain relief. One example of neuropathy requiring surgery is mononeuropathy, resulting from a compression or entrapment-type injury such as a slipped disc in the spine.

Manual Therapy
I basically explain to the patient the easy way and the hard way. The choice depends upon how severe the angulation has become. A small or moderate bunion is easy to fix. In a nutshell, a small incision is made over the bump. The bump is removed. The 1st metatarsal is then cut in a special way to reduce the angulation that exists. This is reduced to the desired correction and held in place with 2 screws. Sutures or staples are used to close the skin. Look at the procedural videos section of the website when you get a chance. Youâ€™ll need to wear a big black boot for about 4-6 weeks. Donâ€™t worry, it matches everything. Generally speaking, I have the patient return to the office approximately 3 days after surgery for their 1st post-operative visit. We make sure everything is ok, take x-rays, refill pain meds, etc. Youâ€™ll need to keep your foot dry until the stitches come out in about 2 weeks. I then see the patient every 2 weeks for the next 2 months. Physical therapy and joint manipulation is standard. As long as there are no complications, I tell the patient youâ€™ll be back in tennis shoes in about 6 weeks and back to your normal, everyday activities, including running, at around 3 months. Oh, donâ€™t forget that if you have right foot surgery, technically you cannot drive with the boot on. I am not only a left foot and ankle surgeon, fortunately.
