Arthroscopy
Treatment of labral tears is an important indication for hip arthroscopy. Repairing a torn labrum (shown in picture) can not only eliminate hip pain, but also delay and possibly eliminate the development of arthritis. Sometimes the body forms extra bone along the margins of the socket or the ball of the hip joint which can cause pain with motion. This extra bone impinges on surrounding bone or soft tissue. Hip Arthroscopy can be used to remove the extra bone and eliminate pain. Tendons can rub on structures about the hip and cause problems. Pain in the front of the hip can be caused by the iliopsoas or sometimes just called the psoas tendon. This tendon can rub on bone, or sometimes even a replaced hip joint, and cause significant symptoms. Hip arthroscopy can be used to release this tendon. For the first few weeks after the release, the hip is weak, however, as the elongated tendon heals, the hip strengthens.
Joint Replacement
Another cause of implant failure is infection. Our bodies are constantly bombarded with bacteria that our kidneys filter out or our immune system eliminate. If these bacteria settle on a foreign material in our body, such as a hip replacement, they can form a biofilm which is an extracellular matrix that antibiotics cannot penetrate. When this happens, the joint replacement usually needs to be removed to treat the infection.
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgery is the a branch of medicine that deals with injuries and disorders of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves. Orthopedic is also frequently spelled orthopaedic from the Greek orthos meaning “correct” or “straight” and paidion meaning “child”. The work literally means “straight child”. Early orthopedic surgeons treated and prevented deformities in children, which is still a major branch of the field.
Arthroscopy
Hip arthroscopy has many other indications, such as removal of loose bodies and inflamed synovium. Many people develop trochanteric bursitis which causes pain along the outside of the hip. This condition usually responds to rest, injections, and therapy, however, sometimes pain persists despite these modalities. An arthroscope can be use to remove the inflamed trochanteric bursa and the pain that has lasted for months or even years eliminated.
Hip Replacement
Patient undergoing hip replacement are typically in the hospital for one day. Sometimes the procedure is performed as a day surgery. The procedure is performed the day of admission and therapy is started shortly after the procedure. Some people go to a rehabilitation center after discharge from the hospital while most go directly home.
Knee Replacement
The knee joint, as well as other joints in the body, are essentially hinges where two bones meet at a point where they can move with respect to one another. Each bone is covered with a material called articular or hyaline cartilage. This cartilage provides an extremely low friction surface that is incredibly durable. People can live active lifestyles for many decades before this articular cartilage show signs of wear. Knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, is a procedure to resurface a knee when the articular cartilage is no longer functioning properly. In most cases, the articular cartilage is worn away from arthritis. In some cases, when only part of the knee is worn out, a partial knee replacement can be performed.
