Colorado Springs Office 8234 C Cessna Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80831 Fort Collins Office 630 Breakwater Drive Fort Collins, CO 80525 What are the causes of pavement deterioration? Raveling- The heat from direct exposure to sunlight and ultra-violet rays cause the liquid aggregates in the pavement to oxidize and become brittle. The weight of vehicles causes these to crumble at the point of contact between the tires and the pavement. Water then washes away the dry, crumbled aggregates. This process is referred to as "raveling" and continues to diminished pavement thickness and reveals a rough, rocky appearance. Cracking- Extreme variations in temperature cause the pavement to expand and contract. When the temperatures change as rapidly as they can in Colorado the pavement contracts or expands, thus cracking occurs. Alligatoring- When it rains or snows, water then enters the crack and overtime, slowly carries away the base of the sub-grade. This causes unstable, unsupported pavement. The weight of vehicles, freeze and thaw cycles, and frost heave can cause the pavement to crack like pieces of a puzzle, which is referred to as "alligatoring". Pothole- Alligatoring will spread through the pavement like cancer, breaking into even smaller pieces and eventually form a pothole. Just like the brakes on a vehicle left un-repaired, the costs increase over time. Immediate response is highly recommended.
