Arthritis
This may affect the front of the uvea (iritis), the back of the uvea, the middle (the vitreous) or the entire span of tissue. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, herpes, syphilis and direct eye trauma have a higher risk for developing uveitis. If the disorder is not treated, permanent damage to the visual system may occur, including an increased risk for cataracts and glaucoma.
Cryotherapy
Treatment of trichiasis generally relies on the removal of the affected eyelashes. When there are relatively few lashes growing toward the eye, the doctor may remove them using forceps under a microscope, but they often grow back the same way. For more permanent relief, electrolysis, radiofrequency, laser or cryotherapy treatments may be used to destroy the follicle so no regrowth can occur.

Glaucoma
The Ahmed valve is a form of treatment for glaucoma that is particularly beneficial for those patients not responding to medication or surgical intervention. Used to regulate ocular pressure levels, the Ahmed valve is a tube system that drains excess fluid from the eye. The fluid flows through the valve and out of the eye into a reservoir where it can be safely absorbed by surrounding tissue. It is implanted within the outer portion of the eye, but covered by conjunctival tissue so it is not visible to others or felt by the patient.

As a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, I joined Total Eye Care shortly after completing my training and education in 1997. I obtained my medical degree from the UT Health Science Center Medical School, Houston and then completed a residency in Comprehensive Ophthalmology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a common condition in older adults and the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in people over the age of 65. Macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for the crisp, detailed vision needed for reading or driving. In individuals with AMD, the tissue in the eye responsible for central vision slowly begins to deteriorate, which can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life.
Laser Eye Surgery
Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, is one of the safest and most time-tested laser vision correction procedures available. Before LASIK, PRK was the most common refractive surgery procedure. Like LASIK, it reshapes the cornea to improve vision. PRK is now used mainly for patients with large pupils or thin corneas.
Cataracts
The PanOptix® Trifocal intraocular lens is used to focus images clearly onto the back of your eye (retina) to allow clear vision after cataract removal. In addition, this lens enables focus at multiple distances to allow for near (reading) vision, intermediate (computer work) vision, and distance (driving) vision.
Cataract Surgery
Hazy capsule, otherwise known as posterior capsular opacification (PCO), is the most frequent complication of cataract surgery. This condition affects one out of four patients within five years of undergoing cataract surgery. A hazy capsule is sometimes referred to as a secondary cataract.
Eye Exam
Patients with this condition often experience irritating symptoms and can suffer from more serious vision damage if this condition is left untreated. It is important for patients with this condition to take special care of their eyes in order to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications. Your doctor can diagnose dry eye during a comprehensive eye examination and by using ancillary tests to measure tear production such as a Schirmer tear test.

Amniotic membrane is found within the human placenta. The placentas used in ProKera are donated by medically screened women after cesarean-section childbirth. The membrane is then cryopreserved and saved in a tissue bank regulated by the FDA.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common type of diabetic eye disease and the leading cause of blindness in the United States. This condition is caused by blood vessel changes within the retina that lead to swelling and leaking of fluid. It can also cause the growth of abnormal new blood vessels on the surface of the retina.

Eyelid Surgery
The standard treatment for dermatochalasis is blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. This procedure improves the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids by tightening muscles and tissue and removing excess fat and skin.
Blepharoplasty
An upper blepharoplasty will tighten the muscles and tissue as well as remove excess fat and skin from the upper eyelids. This can eliminate the drooping of the skin into the visual field, improving peripheral vision tremendously.

A corneal ulcer is a sore that forms on the surface of the cornea, the clear portion of the eye. They are typically the result of a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Other possible causes may be a scratch on the cornea, a dry eye disorder, conditions that produce inflammation and more. Corneal ulcers are more common in those who wear contact lenses, particularly when they are not removed at night or strict hygiene practices are not followed.
Lesions
An eyelid papilloma is a rounded growth that protrudes from the upper or lower eyelid. These are very common lesions that most frequently develop in middle-aged and older patients. Papillomas are most often benign, but in rare cases may be precancerous or malignant. Many patients opt to have these lesions removed even if they pose no medical risk for cosmetic purposes or because they are a source of discomfort.
