Ultrasound
A thyroid ultrasound or a thyroid scan and radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) test are used to detect problems, identify how the thyroid gland is functioning, and specify areas that are overactive or underactive. Further, it can determine if thyroid nodules or possible cancer are present. If cancer is suspected, a needle biopsy of the nodule will be performed to examine the cells.
MRI
X-rays are used to see the condition of your bones and joints, and to identify areas of arthritis or bone spurs. The tissues that surround the joint do not show up on an X-ray. In this case, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan may be requested to get a better view of the soft tissue structures, such as ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.

X-rays can be performed in your doctor’s office, an outpatient radiology center, or a hospital radiology department. An X-ray is a quick, painless procedure. You will be asked to remove metal objects, such as jewelry or watches, from the area being X-rayed. An X-ray technician will position your body in accordance with the X-ray camera.
