Cryotherapy
Most retinal tears need to be treated with either laser surgery or cryotherapy (freezing), which seals the retina to the back of the eye. In some cases an air bubble needs to be injected into the back of the eye so as plaster the retina back into place. Other treatments include surgical placement of a band around the eye (scleral buckle) which helps the retina regain its normal position. Vitrectomy (removal of vitreous gel) is very often done to remove the traction of the vitreous on the retina. Most retinal detachment surgery is successful if the detachment is detected in a timely fashion.

Risk factors of retinal detachment can include high myopia (nearsightedness), previous surgery, glaucoma, injury, previous retinal detachment in either eye or family history of detachments.

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration may be secondary to a lifelong exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or to other hereditary or dietary factors. It is much more common in patients with northern European ancestry. It is less common in African Americans and Hispanics. In most cases macular degeneration is considered an aging process and is sometimes referred to as “age related macular degeneration” or ARMD. The two most common types of ARMD are “dry” (atrophic) and “wet” (exudative)...
Laser Eye Surgery
Nearsightedness, or myopia, is the most common focusing problem, affecting over 25% of the Americans. Nearsighted people can see better up close than distance. This is usually because the eyeball is too long, preventing the cornea and lens from being able to focus rays of light onto the retina. In such a situation, the rays of light converge onto a point which is infront of the retina instead of on the retina. The result is blurry distance vision. Myopia is very often corrected with lasik or with refractive surgery.
Cataracts
A tiny incision is made in the clear cornea and the cataract is quickly sucked out using a small probe. A lens implant is then folded and inserted into the eye through the tiny incision without the need for sutures. The day after, most people do not feel any discomfort at all and usually full restoration of vision occurs within the first week. Most people find that there is a huge improvement by the very next day. Most can work and drive within a few days of the surgery.
Cataract Surgery
Cataracts do not improve and can not be treated. The only known remedy is cataract surgery. Cataract surgery should be performed whenever you feel that your vision is impairing your daily activities of living. If you are not having any difficulties with your vision, you probably do not need cataract surgery unless the cataract is threatening the health of the eye (rare).
