Ultrasound
Testing the woman first looks at whether she is ovulating each month. This can be done by having her chart changes in her morning body temperature, by using an FDA-approved home ovulation test kit (which she can buy at a drug store). Ovulation also can be checked in her doctor's office with an ultrasound test of the ovaries or simple blood tests that check hormone levels, like the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) test. FSH is produced by the pituitary gland. In women, it helps control the menstrual cycle and the production of eggs by the ovaries. The amount of FSH varies throughout the menstrual cycle and is highest just before an egg is released. The amounts of FSH and other hormones (luteinizing hormone, estrogen and progesterone) are measured in both the man and the woman to determine why the couple cannot achieve pregnancy. Chemotherapy
Fertility preservation is a term that generally applies to helping cancer patients retain their fertility despite chemotherapy and radiation treatments, which can affect a woman’s reproductive health. These regimens attack healthy, rapidly dividing cells like sperm and eggs. They can have varying effects on reproductive health. The decrease or loss of reproductive function is temporary in many cancer patients, but many others do not regain their fertility after cancer treatment. Methods of fertility preservation include semen, ovarian tissue and egg freezing. The concept here is to give cancer patients the option to have children sometime after their cancer treatment has been completed.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
There are times when infertility treatments include surgery. Until recently, minimally invasive laparoscopy has been the preferred approach for reproductive surgery. The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include faster recovery, reduced pain and blood loss and lower risk of scar tissue formation, which can actually cause infertility. Some difficult reproductive surgeries have, until recently, required an open surgical approach or laparotomy, which has led to longer hospital stays and recovery times and greater costs associated with extended hospital stays.

Hysterectomy
Pregnancy requires three important components: a sperm, an egg and a uterus. When a woman does not have an ideal uterus for pregnancy (for reasons such as hysterectomy, fibroids that prohibit uterine growth with pregnancy, congenital abnormalities of the uterus and severe pelvic adhesions) or does not have the eggs and uterus for a successful pregnancy, she and her partner may turn to surrogacy or a gestational carrier.
Laparoscopy

Robotic surgery combines the advantages of minimally invasive laparoscopy with the full range of motion a surgeon needs to achieve better outcomes.
