Insects and Spiders

Ants
Ants are very social insects. They live in groups called colonies. A single colony may have up to a million ants. And each ant has a role and serves a purpose. Worker ants collect food by following scent trails left by scout ants. These scout ants set out in search of food, as they have a strong sense of direction and the ability to remember visual cues. Once they find food, they return to the nest, leaving behind a path marked by pheromones as a guide for worker ants. There are certain ant species, in which soldier ants have modified heads, shaped to match their nest entrance. They block access to their nest by sitting just inside the entrance, with their heads facing out like a cork in a bottle. When worker ants return, they touch the soldier ant’s head to announce that they’re from the same colony, and thus gain access. Ants and humans have the same biomass on earth. The total biomass of all the ants on Earth is roughly equal to the total biomass of all the people on Earth. Scientists estimate that there are around 1.5 million ants for every human on the planet.
Spiders
Looks very similar to a Tarantula, but are generally smaller. There are more than 2,300 species of wolf spiders, 200 species live in the United States.
Termites
Have you ever wonder how such a tiny bug eats something as strong as wood? Termites have special enzymes, protozoa and bacteria in their guts that allow them to digest cellulose. Cellulose is the organic fibrous material in wood and plants. Sound delicious? Not really....but the good news is, at the rate a single termite eats wood, based on some loose but reasonable assumptions, it would take one termite 3,144 years to eat the wood in a 1,000-square- foot home. But termites don’t live alone. That’s the bad news. The largest subterranean termite colonies eat about a pound of wood per day. Even when the amount of wood eaten in a day by a termite is multiplied by 1,000,000 termites, it may not seem like very much. The problem is that termites remain hidden when they attack a home. So days, weeks and years of chomping on wood add up. By the time they are finally discovered, severe termite damage may be present.
Bed Bugs
There is a huge myth that bed bugs are attracted to dirt and grime. That's not exactly true. The main thing that makes us so attractive to bed bugs is the carbon dioxide our bodies produce. Secondly, is the warmth, with darkness coming in last. While decluttering, cleaning and vacuuming will eliminate possible hiding spots, it will not stop the infestation. Bed bugs like to make their homes within a 5 ft radius of their host. With 1/3 of our day being spent in the bedroom, it makes this room the most common place. Bed bugs can feed on any warm-blooded host, animal or human. Humans are the most sought after target because of our exposed skin. If bitten, you will not know until AFTER the bug feeds. This is due to the fact that their salvia acts like an anesthetic. Once they begin to feed, they will inject their saliva into the host. This promotes blood flow and prevents clotting, making the process quick and painless. And because their bites are so small and they usually feed in a pattern, the bites are often mistaken for rashes.
Fleas
Fleas are a wingless insect that jump. If they were human sized athletes participating in the long jump in the Olympics, certain fleas could break the current world record by approximately 970 feet. They have been on earth for 100 million years and there are over 2000 species. The most common flea is the Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis). If you find a flea on your cat or dog, there could be an infestation on your pets and around your home. Adult fleas are only a small percentage of the total population of a given infestation.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are not only an annoying pest; they can pose certain health risk. Not only do they spread germs and bacteria, they can also trigger asthma and allergy attacks. Cockroaches are believed to have originated over 280 million years, thus their resilience can make them a hard target if not treated correctly. A very short life span. The worker wasps, which are sterile females, only live about 12-22 days. Males typically live longer to carry on the reproduction cycle. These flies are thought to have made the journey from Europe to the U.S. by hiding onboard ships. Their behavior is similar to stink bugs, as they prefer to fly indoors as temperatures cool during fall. Cluster flies live up to their name by gathering in large numbers on a warm, sunny wall. They tend to fly sluggishly, making them an easier target for a homeowner’s fly swatter.
Stinging Insects
Grasshoppers, flies and aphids. They also like nectar, tree sap, fruit and human foods which can cause them to be a huge nuisance at picnics. Their food choice is not the only thing that makes them annoying, they can also be loud and very aggressive. Wasp can be a fierce predator and can pack a powerful sting. And if a wasp feels it is in danger, it will emit a pheromone that will signal other wasp to come to his aide. Wasp’s stingers are no barbed like other stinging insects, thus giving them the ability to sting multiple times.

Gnats
Depending on where you live, these pests may be called “turkey gnats” or “buffalo gnats.” Their feeding habits can be painful to the skin of livestock, poultry, and humans. However, black flies do not transmit diseases to humans.

Rodents
Due to their extremely flexible bodies, as long as the opening is big enough for their skull a mouse can get in. Rodents are family oriented and like to live together in colonies. However, males are very territorial, so as males come in they make break off from the colonies to make their own in different rooms of your home.
Mice
Mice and rodents can swim, and a rat can tread water for up to three days. They can survive being flushed away or down the toilet, and can even return to the building via the same route.
Rats
Rodents are prolific when it comes to reproducing. Rats can produce a litter up to 15 times a year and mice can produce a litter of 5-6 babies every three weeks. A single pregnant mother entering a home can cause a large infestation in no time. They start to reproduce at just 6 weeks old and can become pregnant again within 24 hours of giving birth.
