Cryotherapy
Proton beam radiation, HIFU, high dose rate brachytherapy, and cryotherapy were not recommended as primary treatment due to either poor results or lack of the necessary long-term data.
Primary Care
If your primary care physician detects an abnormal PSA or a lump in your prostate during a physical exam, you will be referred to a Urologist for evaluation and consideration for a biopsy. This is a simple procedure that can be done in a few minutes in the Urologist’s office. With an ultrasound in the rectum, thin needles can be inserted into the prostate to remove tiny fragments for evaluation. Typically at least eight biopsies are performed, four from each side of the prostate. These biopsies are sent to a lab where a physician will determine if cancer is present. If so, they will then determine how aggressive the cancer is. A scoring system, called the Gleason score, assigns the cancer a number from 2 – 10, with 2 being a less aggressive cancer, and 10 being a more aggressive cancer.
Urinary Incontinence
In contrast to proton beam radiation, long-term side effects are very rare with seed implants. Using an intra-operative dosimetry technique, the likelihood of the seeds migrating outside the prostate is less than 0.4%. Urinary incontinence occurs in less than 1% of men following a seed implant. Other severe urinary problems are also very rare. (Zelefsky, 2007)

Urology
One of the largest HIFU Prostate Cancer Treatment series shows only a 59% disease-free survival at 7-years for early-stage patients (Blana, European Urology 2008). These results are considerably lower than the published results from larger series with radiation (94-98% SUCCESS RATES for similar patients).

Lung Cancer
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of stigma on prostate cancer (PCa) survivors’ quality of life. Stigma for lung cancer survivors has been the focus of considerable research (Else-Quest & Jackson, 2014); however, gaps remain in understanding the experience of PCa stigma. A cross-sectional correlational study was designed to assess the incidence of PCa stigma and its influence on the quality of life of survivors. Eighty-five PCa survivors were administered survey packets consisting of a stigma measure, a PCa-specific quality of life measure, and a demographic survey during treatment of their disease. A linear regression analysis was conducted with the data received from PCa survivors. Results indicated that PCa stigma has a significant, negative influence on the quality of life for survivors (R2 = 0.33, F(4, 80) = 11.53, p < 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in PCa stigma based on demographic variables (e.g., race and age). Implications for physical and mental health practitioners and researchers are discussed.

Ultrasound
Treatment is associated with the absorption of ultrasound energy into the prostate and surrounding tissues to cause the heating of cells.
MRI
MRI provides three-dimensional, or multiplanar, views of an internal organ or structure. MRI offers increased-contrast resolution, enabling better visualization of soft tissues such as the brain and spinal cord.
Radiology
The Department of Defense awarded Jamie Cesaretti MD a large grant that allowed him to complete important investigations in this area. He and his research group were also awarded funding by the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Computed Tomography
The 3-D high-quality images taken at the time of your treatment can be studied against your previous CT scans precisely and promptly to ensure that the doctors are treating your tumor as accurately as possible while greatly limiting any exposure to healthy tissue in the area.
Chemotherapy
Protein is needed for growth, tissue repair, and keeping your immune system healthy enough to fight off disease. With cancer, you will need more protein to help your body recover from the cancer, as well as the chemotherapy or radiation provided as treatment. This protein will help repair the diseased and damaged tissue. Protein can be found in lean sources of meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, nuts, beans, peas, and soy.

Robotic Surgery
Robotic prostatectomy can be done at select institutions. The surgeon guides robotic arms to help perform the operation. Smaller incisions are used, which may result in slightly shorter recovery times. Several studies have, however shown a higher risk of positive margins (leaving cancer behind) following robotic surgery requiring supplemental treatment afterward. (JCO 2008)
