Telogen effluvium is hair loss caused by stress. It is typically short-lived and occurs during the resting, or telogen, phase of hair growth. Normally, between 5 to 10 percent of hair follicles are in the resting phase, but too much stress can cause upwards of 30 percent to enter this stage prematurely. This results in a higher amount of dormant hair follicles and increased shedding. Hair loss is commonly associated with men but can happen to women as well. When it occurs for men, it typically begins when an individual is in their mid to late 20s and commonly occurs before they reach 50. Women are more likely to lose their hair in their 40s or 50s if it is an inherited gene. When hair loss occurs, it can be damaging to an individual’s self-confidence and can potentially make them feel or look older than they are. Understand, though, that your hair loss is more than likely not a direct result of your actions but is the product of your inherited genetics.

While typically associated with men, women can also experience genetic hair loss. Female pattern baldness is also hereditary, but this type of hair loss is more diffuse and usually begins at the top of the head, widening through the center hair part. The front hairline and temples are typically unaffected. It can be more difficult to diagnose genetic hair loss in women due to a number of factors â€” such as pregnancy, hormonal changes and thyroid disorders â€” that could contribute to the problem. Since each personâ€™s physiological makeup is unique, hair loss can occur for any number of reasons. The effects of fluctuating hormone levels, stress, and even poor nutrition account for thinning hair over time. Life events and physical changes, such as aging, pregnancy, illness and certain medications further increase the likelihood of continued hair loss. For patients who have undergone chemotherapy, they may also notice that after their recovery, their hair does not grow back the same as it once did.
Radiation Therapy
Superficial radiotherapy (SRT?) utilizing SRT-100TM by Sensus Healthcare, is the most revolutionary new modality for keloid and hypertrophic scar. This FDA-approved therapy is among the most effective procedures to treat even the toughest keloid. While SRT-100TM can be used to treat keloid without incision utilizing a protocol of one SRT session per week for 4 weeks in a row, SRT modality has the highest success rate (in excess of 90%) when it is performed once daily, 3 days in a row, preferably within 24 hours of surgical excision of the original keloid skin tissue. Most treated patients will experience concurrent reduction or itching and pain associated with keloids. SRT has much greater safety margins compared to traditional orthovoltage radiation therapy as SRT involves typically one thousand times less energy, no associated radioactivity or scattered radiation. Side effects associated with SRT for keloids are usually minimal and may include pigmentary changes in the treated area. SRT for keloid is typically covered by most PPO insurance carriers (subject to typical copay, deductible and coinsurance) and Medicare though preauthorization may be required. Any residual keloid tissue after SRT can be further flattened with intralesional 5-fluorouracil/cortisone injection at later date.

Compared to the legacy orthovoltage systems that are used in some dermatology and radiation oncology practices, Sensus offers the SRT-100â„¢ as a modern solution, which is a safe, effective, and reliable technology for efficient treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers.

Mohs Surgery
Over 50% of skin cancers occur in those over 60. This population also has a high incidence of risk for surgical procedures due to various disorders like diabetes and cardiac diseases that can slow the healing process. The traditional treatment path for non-melanoma skin cancer has been Mohs surgery. This surgery involves a series of excisions of cancerous tissue and surrounding healthy tissue until the cancer can no longer be detected. This procedure can lead to substantial cosmetic surgery requirements and a drawn-out healing process which can result in infection. SRT-100â„¢ offers a different solution for non-melanoma skin cancer treatment for those who have a high surgery risk. Because 80 percent of skin cancers occur in the head and neck regions, where surgery would require great tissue loss and significant cosmetic repair after surgery, SRT-100 by Sensus looked to a 50-year proven technique, known as low energy radiotherapy which goes no deeper than the thickness of the skin to effectively treat non-melanoma skin cancer.

For hyperhidrosis on palms, feet, forehead or scalp, Dr. Ting recommends botulinum toxin injection as miraDry is not an option for these anatomic areas. BOTOXÂ® is FDA-approved for excessive underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents such as Drysol. Besides underarm areas, Botox has been found to be very helpful for excessive sweating in palms, forehead, etc. BOTOXÂ®treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands donâ€™t receive chemical signals, the excessive sweating stops. You should notice a significant reduction in sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment. BOTOXÂ® treatment is very effective. One clinical study involved 322 patients with excessive underarm sweating. Clinical trials of Botox Cosmetic demonstrate that it can be extremely effective in treating excessive sweating under the arms and on the hands 84 out of 104 BOTOXÂ® treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweatingâ€”compared to only 44 out of 108 treated without BOTOXÂ® (41%).

Dermabrasion
The skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin, made by cells in the skin known as melanocytes. When these cells become unhealthy or damaged, it can affect melanin production. If the body produces too much melanin, the skin can get darker, causing hyper-pigmentation. Pregnancy, hormonal changes and sun exposure can contribute to this process. Alternatively, post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation often affects those with acne and can occur as a result of tissue damage, wounds or specific skin treatments, such as chemical peels or dermabrasion.

Non-cancerous skin growths, or Seborrheic Keratoses, affect over 83 million people in America of all ages, but tend to be more commonly seen in people aged 30 and up. Flat or raised, these lesions donâ€™t always look or feel the same, with textures ranging from shiny to wart-like or velvety. Over time, they can grow thicker and more can appear across the body. A majority of these lesions go untreated, but certain spots can make those who have them feel self-conscious, or uncomfortable when they chafe against clothing. Cleaning oneâ€™s face is an important part of the acne skin care routine, particularly at the end of the day to remove dirt, perspiration, skin debris, and makeup (if applicable). Dr. Ting will recommend a specific face wash depending on your skin type (oily vs. dry, redness vs. pigmented). Most of us spend no more than 2 seconds washing our face. Therefore, utilizing Clarisonic brush as part of your skin cleansing routine can be quite helpful which forces you to wash your entire face and clean the pores for 60 seconds via ultrasonic vibration.
Microdermabrasion
Avoid specific treatments â€“ Dr. Ting advises explicitly against the use of IPL or Fraxel for the treatment of melasma, particularly for those with darker skin tones, as there is a substantial risk of worsening pigmentation issues. While microdermabrasion can be helpful for some patients, it must be done in a medical setting under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist.
