GLEN DOW ACADEMY The Glen Dow Academy of Hair Design, Inc was formed in 1969 to provide students and the community with an excellent level of service to meet the strong needs of our profession. We strive to develop an environment where creativity and growth are emphasized. To achieve our goals, there is a commitment from staff members and students to teach and learn in the most professional manner." Unlike many institutions that expect students to find their own way to pay for their education, the staff at Glen Dow Academy will assist you in every way. GDA is only one of a few cosmetology schools in the Inland Northwest that offers Title IV Financial Aid. Becky Smith in our Financial Aid Department will do everything from guiding you through all the financial aid and loan options, to going over private loan options with you.' If a student is still considered a dependant ( younger than 24, no children, not married ) and their parents are interested in helping them with school expenses, there are also Parent Plus Loans available. These are low interest loans with up to 10 year repayments. Again, the team at Glen Dow Academy will happily provide you with information and assistance. Contact Becky Smith, in our Financial Aid Department if you need further assistance or information. The minimum enrollment requirements are being of 17 years of age and completion of a high school diploma/GED. As a private school, we do have an application process that includes a school tour, interview, and aptitude test. Appointments can be made with Sara_Meddock. She will be your first contact at the school.

I can't believe the way I was treated today!!!! My first time there and I thought you are to be trained to listen to customers??? My daughter has autism and has beautiful naturally thick straight hair, like my hair, you have to cut it a certain way, I explained this to the student and she went and got an instructor and I explained to her how it needs to be done and she argued with me and said "I been an instructor for 42 years and I know natural hair" She was defying me and the rude lady tells me I can't sit back with my kid!!! She just wanted me out so she could cut it her way without me there. I will not pass a good word for this place, the only reason I went there is because the other school we went to moved, and NEVER had any issues. So to say Glen Dow School sucks. The only reason I am giving a star is because I am required to.

extremely inconsistent, NEVER going back

Since I moved to Spokane I went to Glen Dow once before and had one of the best highlights and trims ever. The last time I went I walked out with my roots a BRIGHT orange/yellow color that made me look like a clown. When I scheduled, I requested for any of the students that would be graduating in the next month because I figured they would be the most experienced and do the best job. The girl I was scheduled with didn't listen to anything I said. I told her I wanted my roots to be touched up with highlights and for an inch to be taken off of the bottom. She started the foils on the back of my head and by the time she got to the front I realized she was completely bleaching my roots and wasn't weaving through them like with highlights. I asked her why she wasn't weaving through my hair and she goes, "Oh is that what the usually do?" and I said, "Um, Yeah." Obviously pissed. She didn't say anything else and kept bleaching my roots! By this time I was shaking because I knew I was going to look like an idiot. So then after she finishes the foils, she leaves the bleach in for probably triple the amount of time I usually get the bleach left in. My hair is really fine and already pretty light so it doesn't take long to lighten. My scalp burned for 3 days after I got it done because of the bleach. After she washed and dried my hair I was welling up with tears. I told her that it looked horrible and I would never go out in public looking how I did. She ran and got an instructor and they said that since they charged me for an extra mix of bleach that they didn't use they'd tone my hair for "free." Apparently their definition of "toning" someone's hair at Glen Dow is getting a squirt bottle with toner in it and barely spraying any on wet hair. She probably left the toner in for one minute before she washed it out. It looked the exact same when she was done. I could tell she knew she had f'ed up my hair and felt bad so she said that she'd put lowlights in it for free but she wouldn't be able to get me in until a week later. I scheduled with her but the next day got my hair fixed as much as was possible at a REAL salon. This was two months ago and I'm still waiting for it to grow out enough to hopefully cover it all up with some good highlights from a professional. My hair, even with a real toner put in and a full head of lowlights, is two toned. The top is a coppery blonde and the bottom is more of the natural blonde I had before. I'm shocked that the instructor didn't check in more often and allowed my hair to be ruined. I am also shocked that this student would be graduating in less than a month, I believe that this reflects how well they're taught at this school and will never ever return there. I was charged 70 dollars for my hair to be fried. She must have been scared to cut my hair too short too because after she trimmed it I honestly couldn't even tell anything had been taken off. Not happy with the students, instructors, OR the school in general. DO NOT recommend going unless you know one of the students personally and are confident with their ability.

Beware of the Director

I was watching my Girlfriend get her haircut by a friend who is going to school there. As she was cutting the bottom in the back, the Director walked up, said to her "Can I show you something?" -took the scissors from her hands and started cutting the sides of my gf's hair. It was a short cut, & he smoothed it all over, like a men's generic cut. I approached him and stated that while it was probably a valuable lesson, because the stylist learned from it, but he did not ask the client what she was going for and now she is unhappy and its too short. I advised that next time, he should make sure he knows what the client was going for. He stated he had asked the stylist. (but he did not, he asked her if he could show her "something".) He then said that their policy was "You have to wait out there"(waiting room). & when I said I was fine where I was before he was upset, he opened his phone, stating he was calling the police. We will never go back, and I am writing to the edu board!

Haircut

I am so impressed. I've had a cut/highlight and then another cut a few months later and I will definitely go back.

Best School In Spokane

I can honestly say the education I received at GDA was the best in the area. The instructors are amazing and have years and years of experience behind them. They have a loyal client base which kept us busy. I now am working and making more than I would have ever dreamed, all while being able to spend time with my daughter and be a mom. I'm so grateful for the future Glen Dow prepared me for. Mr. Martin knows this business and genuinly cares for his school. And Ms. Cornehl and Mcnutt are the best instructors in town!!!
