Inside, check the driver's seat for wear and feel for broken springs. Seats are easily repaired, but an original covering in good shape is another excellent “buy” indicator. Gauges also reflect truck condition. Look to see if the faces are faded. The mechanical Bourdon tube temperature gauges Chevy used until 1955 are fragile. Does the temperature gauge on a cold engine register at the low end? If it indicates a temperature above ambient, it is broken. The capillary tube to the engine frequently breaks from years of vibration fatigue or twists off when the bulb is unscrewed during engine work. (When installing a temperature gauge to the head, put anti-seize lubricant on the threads where the bulb seats on the nut and where the capillary tube passes through. Then the nut will turn without twisting off the bulb or the tube. If this tip is too late, there are people who specialize in rebuilding and recalibrating this type of temperature gauge.)

Oil Change
After an oil change, any oil turns black fairly quickly from carbon. If non-detergent oil sits undisturbed for about a year, it turns clear because the carbon settles to the bottom. Modern oil will stay dark indefinitely because the carbon does not settle out.

Here's where we can start defining restoration. My goal is to have a useful vehicle capable of performing its original function. Visually it should look like it left the factory. If it had lumpy roof seams from the factory, leave them in. Over detailing makes a show vehicle, not a driver. The driven vehicle—especially a truck—will pick up scratches and eventually show some wear. That's OK for economical transportation. Mechanically the vehicle should also be close to the way it left the factory. If we add a Mustang sub frame, we are not preserving a Chevrolet. The public gets the impression that the original product was inferior and the Mustang sub frame improves the old car for modern use. This is the opposite of the impression I want to create. Original Chevrolet suspensions work fine when brought back to factory specifications.

I also asked about corrosion inhibitors in brake fluid. Valvoline said alkalis and buffers are used to prevent corrosion. This is important at the outer edge of brake cylinders, where atmospheric moisture interfaces with the brake-fluid film. Even with its anti-corrosion package and low-moisture-absorbing formula, Valvoline still recommended changing brake fluid every two years, which it felt was about the frequency of brake repairs on vehicles driven daily. The company also said moisture diffuses through the flexible brake hoses at the axles. The anti-corrosion additives in brake fluid can be used up, much like the additives in engine oil, which are changed at that point. It sounds like a good argument to change glycol brake fluid whenever performing other brake or axle work.
