Dental Care
Dental cleanings that are done at our clinic are similar to cleanings humans receive at their dentist. We perform an initial exam to determine the pets overall health, as well as to find out what dental problems need to be addressed (possible extractions that will be needed, gingevitis, etc). The pet is then anesthetized and photos are taken of the teeth. We scrape the plaque from the teeth, check for fractures, bone loss, gum disease, and other issues. We may need to take x-rays if certain teeth appear to have root problems. Extractions are done if needed, the remaining teeth are polished, and a fluoride treatment is applied. We then take another photo once the teeth are clean.

Vaccination
Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of infected animals. It is contracted via bitewound from one animal to another. Rabies is lethal and can be transmitted to humans, which is why this vaccine is required. Domestic cats have been known to contract rabies, and should also be vaccinated. Because cats often hunt bats, we highly recommend rabies vaccination since in 2008 we sent in a bat which tested positive for rabies from the McKenzie Valley.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
SENIOR WELLNESS EXAM: This exam is critical for our older patients. Dogs should generally have this exam done when they are 7 years old, and cats when they are 10 years old. We look at issues such as: kidney and liver functions (to determine if disease is present); whether arthritis is becomming an issue; whether eye problems such as blindness, cataracts, or glaucoma are evident; whether hearing loss is evident; and whether teeth are in poor condition. We also discuss your pets diet and weight issues, expectations for the future, and advice for how to help alleviate many problems.
Nutritional Counseling
This disease starts like so many other diseases with lethargy, loss of appetite and vomiting, but eventually harms the liver and kidneys and can be fatal. It is preventable with an initial series of two vaccinations followed by an annual booster vaccination. Unlike Rabies, Distemper and Parvo, your pet must be revaccinated every year for Lepto as the duration of the immunity from the vaccination is not as long. The primary group of dogs that we make the strongest recommendation for vaccinating is hunting dogs that are used in wet environments or any dog that is often hiking, camping, or drinking water from outside sources.
Comprehensive Examination
ANNUAL EXAM: An annual exam is critical to maintaining a healthy pet for a number of reasons. We are able to catch early stages of diseases and hereditary issues, which can be life-saving or improve the quality of your pet’s life. We examine their overall health, including their heart and lungs, bone structure and muscle mass, eyes, ears, skin, weight, teeth, unusual growths, and temperament. We also discuss your pets lifestyle and any new issues related to their health. This is an ideal time to vaccinate your pet as well. We recommend this exam be done yearly, since dogs and cats live such a short amount of time. The commonly accepted rule is: 1 human year is like 7 years to a dog or 5 to a cat.

Parasites Treatment and Control
We are seeing increased numbers of pets infected with roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms, most of which pose a zoonotic threat to people. Therefore we recommend a yearly parasite control plan that you can discuss with your veterinarian.
Pain Management
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don’t whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.

Diarrhea Treatment
This disease is recognized by the following: the dog developing a substantially elevated temperature, loss of appetite, lethargy, then progressing to vomiting and watery diarrhea. The sooner you bring your dog in to be treated the better success of recovery they have. If the disease is recognized within the first couple of days when they have not yet become dehydrated, the response to treatment is dramatic. However, if dehydration is allowed to develop, the animal then requires intravenous fluids in addition to antibiotic therapy. This can be a deadly condition, but the determinant of both the cost of treatment and the chances of survival of your dog hinge on early recognition of the condition.

This disease is called Leptospirosis and can affect many species including your dogs, cattle, or humans.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Commonly known as “kitty AIDS”, there is no vaccine for this virus, but we can test your cat to see if it is infected.
Anal Gland Infection Treatment
OFFICE VISITS & LIMITED EXAMS: These visits are often conducted by veterinary technicians or assistants. We can conduct non-medical treatments such as nail trims, ear cleaning and mite checks, anal gland expression, give bordtella vaccines, microchip, and offer advice on numerous issues. We can also conduct a cursory exam, but cannot prescribe any medications or give veterinary recommended advice.

Heart Disease Treatment
Dental care is a very important part of your pet’s health. Recent statistics show 1 out of 3 dogs and cats have dental disease by the time they are 3 years old. Dental disease can cause serious health issues such as heart disease, infections, tooth loss, and bone loss (jaw loss). These problems can result in the inability to eat or pain while eating.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Acupuncture can be used alone or combined with other therapies to help with numerous issues including; musculoskeletal (hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ruptures, arthritis), neurologic (IVDD, paralysis, seizures), cardiovascular, GI (vomiting, diarrhea, constipation), respiratory (URI, sinusitis, asthma, cough), dermatologic (skin and ear allergies and infections), urinary (kidney disease, cystitis), immunologic (FeLV, FIV, stomatitis, IBD), neoplasia, reproductive (irregular estrus cycles, infertility), geriatric (quality of life, overall support, stiffness and pain relief), and trigger points.

Wound and Fracture Care
The most common species to cause conflict with our pets are porcupine, raccoon, nutria, bats, coyote, bobcat and cougar. Conflicts are rare, but they do happen. Dogs will often try to kill porcupine and nutria, but do not realize that these are tough foes. Porcupines will leave your dog impaled will dozens of quills that require a veterinarian and anesthesia to remove. Bats can transmit the rabies virus to your pet if they are bitten by a rabid bat. These bats, being sick, are found by your pet on the ground. When your pet tries to kill the bat, your pet may be bitten. Nutria, raccoons, bobcat, coyote, and cougar can kill dogs due to the severe bite wounds they inflict. Most wildlife avoids humans and pets, unless it is ill or looking for easy prey. Your housecat or tiny dog may be easy prey for a hungry coyote or cougar. It is important never to leave food outside of your home (ie. cat food), since this will attract all kinds of wild animals who are hungry and looking for a free meal.

Spaying and Neutering
Spaying and neutering pets are common surgeries performed in our clinic. We recommend all pets be spayed or neutered (unless there is an intention to breed them later in life), due to the tremendous problem of pet overpopulation in our country.

Laboratory Services
If any teeth are pulled, pain medication is administered and sent home with the owner. We also give an injection of penicillin and may send some home. Additional services may include a pre-surgical bloodscreen. This test is recommended for any pet that has compromised health, or is over 7 years of age. It is not required, but it is highly advisable. This blood test is run prior to anesthetizing your pet, so as to be certain their health is adequate to undergo anesthesia. If the blood test shows very poor results, we may decide to not perform the dental cleaning at least without further discussion with the owner. X-Ray
Microchipping
Microchips are small identification devices implanted under your pets skin between their shoulder blades (usually). They are about the size of a grain of rice, and have serial numbers encoded that can be read by microchip scanners. Most veterinarians and animal control agencies have these scanners, so when a dog or cat is found and brought into the facility, they are able to read the number and contact the owner.
