General Info: The Breast Care Center at United Medical Park has been serving the Cedar Valley since 2003. We are open Monday through Friday, currently with clinic hours three afternoons a week with Dr. Jayson Gesme. We offer in-office ultrasound, ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy (cytology), and ultrasound guided core biopsy (tissue). Stereotactic breast biopsy (tissue) is also offered as a scheduled procedure.

Primary Care
Genetic testing is offered locally at the cancer treatment centers, as well as the breast centers, and some primary care offices.Â Samples of either blood or saliva can be submitted for DNA sampling.
Immunizations
The CDC and IDPH does not require vaccinated persons to mask indoors; however,Â regardless of vaccination status, patients can request that a CVMS employee wear a mask during their appointment, and we will be happy to oblige.Â

Cervical Cancer

Ultrasound
No, sometimes the initial mammogram views will show an area that isn’t completely clear to the radiologist. Further mammogram views, often magnified are taken. Ultrasound is sometimes recommended as well.
Radiology
There is a special kind of second opinion that, while not independent, is worth considering because itâ€™s a great way to get a wide range of opinions all at once. This is the Tumor Board or tumor conference. Most hospitals have a tumor board which is a regular meeting of a group of doctors to consider the best treatment for specific cases presented by members of the group. PhysiciansÂ from several specialties such as surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pathology and diagnostic radiology will attend. If your doctor doesnâ€™t seem to have a clear recommendation for you, consider asking if he could present your case to the tumor board. The Breast Care Center participates in Tumor Board review of all our breast cancer patients, in conjunction with UnityPoint Health Community Cancer Center and MercyOne Radiation Oncology.
Mammography
As long as your facility utilizes digital mammography, and most do, it does not matter. Tomosynthesis (tomo) (3D) mammography is the standard in mammography, but not all facilities have 3D. Women with significantly dense breasts or a history of breast cancer benefit the most from this technology. Instead of having two views done of each breast, the 3D can take digital picture â€œslicesâ€ of the breast, better visualizing through dense breast tissue. Insurance is now generally covering 3D mammography.
Chemotherapy
Such as, if your tumor is on the borderline of requiring chemotherapy either before or after surgery, you might want a second opinion.
Radiation Oncology
Frequently surgery is the first approach, but not always. You will be referred to Medical Oncology to become acquainted with them and to get their input as to the timing of medical oncology treatment (hormone blockers, chemotherapy). You may also be referred to Radiation Oncology for any needed radiation treatment.

Skin Cancer
Cancer genetic panel testing also include the genes for cancers affecting colon/gastric, pancreatic, prostate, melanoma, ovarian/uterine and others. Most genes affect more than one body system.
